Program Highlights: The purpose of the Innovation Center (IC) is to "Organically grow the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem" In 2015, instead of creating a space within the confines of the college for community designing and fabrication, we decided to expand the borders. If the space was on the campus, it would be limited to appointments, availability of staff, location and more. The greater Kansas city & Leavenworth areas have many inventors as well as individuals who own tools, equipment, and software. It was decided that in supporting the community in its own digital fabrication efforts, many of the limits of a college housed space would be removed while growing the entrepreneurial ecosystem of the area… 100 local Garages was initiated. This economic development plan pairs local inventors with local makers to turn ideas into opportunities through a collaborative partnership with ShopBot Tools. The IC supports those efforts by providing direct, hands-on services to individuals, businesses, and organizations who want to start/grow their business, or who have ideas for inventions. Assistance is provided from the beginning steps of starting a business to more complex assistance including manufacturing, federal contract bidding and more. Additionally, two pitch competitions are held; the Start Fest and the Grow Fest where entrepreneurs have an opportunity to promote their ideas with the public and investors.
